The massive swelling and huge bruising left probably 6 or 8 weeks post injury, but even today I keep my leg elevated when sitting to avoid stiffening and swelling in the ankle. I can do a ton of pistol squats on my left leg since it held up my whole body for so long :)) My physical recovery has been slower than I expected ( I'm 29, fit/sporty) but I was able to start PT pretty quickly (I never had a cast because my swelling was so large there was a risk of compartment syndrome, among other things), and start exercising the rest of my body in Feb/March 2019 with pullups, body weight exercises.
Tib fib fracture nfl how to#
How to recognize and manage ptsd ( mine manifested extremely physically ( vertigo, paralysis, passing out) and when I was falling asleep. How to be kind and grateful while experiencing a severe injury. What it means to rely on another person for something as small as bathing or bringing a glass of water. While this experience is hard, there are many things I appreciate about it.

I'll have my hardware, which does impede my mobility somewhat, removed around a year after my bones are fully healed. Walking is slower and gimpier than pre-fracture, no running or jumping yet, but I'm ok with that. My leg is still healing, so I'm still dealing with swelling and achiness if I have a long day. For me, the first month was incredibly difficult, especially the hospital stay, and slowly started improving after that with lots of ups and downs along the way. I have an IM nail and 5 screws in my right leg. I was hit by a car last September- compound open fracture of the right leg with internal bleeding, broken ribs, hand. Please share as much of your recovery methods (physically and emotionally) as you wish, I'd be interested in it all.īest of luck to those who are still healing and hope you are all safe for those who have recovered! I live in Brooklyn, NY so any affordable services in this area would be helpful to make the load a bit easier (any affordable food delivery services or folks to help with laundry?).Īlso, could folks that have gone through this share their experiences? When did the swelling go down for you, and when were you able to walk? When were you able to get up and down the stairs? I am very scared to try the stairs with the crutches, but I'm ok with the butt scoot method in the meantime :)Īny tips for maintaining mental health in this journey? My partner was there during the accident and has his own processing to take care of (he saw me flip around in the air and fly forward and it haunts him as he tries to sleep), so I want to divert some of the load to others/"affordable" services wherever possible. My family lives far away and I think my mental health would tank even more if I lived there during this whole thing. I'm having a hard time getting through this and I find myself having a hard time asking for help from others that I don't really know that well (I moved to NY 10 months ago). Waiting until you’re in unbearable pain is ineffective and results in requiring a higher dose of stronger pain relief in order to ease it.A motorcyclist hit me going ~45 mph about 10 days ago and so I got surgery to help remedy a broken tib/fib (a rod and 4 screws). This is a much more effective way of managing pain. That way pain relief is onboard before the other one wears off but you’re still maintaining 6 hours of separation between each dose of Tylenol and each dose of Ibuprofen. Alternate between Tylenol and Ibuprofen every 3 hours religiously(seriously, set alarms). It’s also emotionally painful and exhausting. A broken bone isn’t just physically painful. Distracting your mind will help you avoid holding onto the negative emotions. Allow yourself to feel all the emotions but don’t wallow in them. Keep your mind busy, keep the knee elevated and supported and ice it regularly. Hang in there because this will be a rough ride. As someone who has suffered traumatic fractures and also had my knee surgically fractured in order to reconstruct it, surgically fractured bones are more painful.

That’s why your knee hurts worse than your ankle. Essentially, they did surgically break your knee in order to insert the rod. Basically they hammered a rod into your tibia which is done from the proximal(top) end. That’s important information you probably should put in the post.
